Old Mac Donald Farm - Sensory Pretend Play

The next idea I'm gonna add to the 'animals' series is the Old MacDonald Farm pretend play with sensory touch. As I mentioned earlier, this season LO is crazy about animals. Every day he plays with animals, and not at all bored! I wonder, how come he isn't feeling bored? So I thought let's do some pretend play, with the animals in hand. So ended up in doing Old MacDonald Farm setup. This is an easy and fun sensory play for children.

We didn't have any large sized sensory tub, so just used cardboard as a base. We gathered all  the materials, and started to setup. At the beginning LO didn't get the idea about what I'm doing. He was bit not happy with me doing the setup and using his toys😛 But finally when it was done, he was so excited, and gave me ideas to fine tune it and helped me in completing it

Materials Used:
  • Big cardboard for the base
  • Farm animals of your choice
  • Beans used - Navadhania, split peas, Kidney beans ( You can use beans of your choice like green beans, black eyed beans or colored rice)
  • Blue color Play dough for water pond
  • Some Pebble stones
  • Old MacDonald Figurine
  • A toy tractor
  • Some cups and food to feed the animals

How do we make it:

Extend you creativity and Imagination and setup the farm. I have done this with the materials available in hand. You can detail the farm by making dog's kennel, stable for horse, etc. You can decorate this with real grasses and straw. You can make partitions with cardboard too. If you have a sensory tub the work will be much more easier. Try building an Old MacDonald's farm 'Barn' with your kids. They would love to do.

We used pebbles, to make the farm boundary, blue color play dough for the Duck's pond, Lego to build the Barn and various wooden materials to group the animals.

After the setup is done LO went keen on reworking!!

With a "meow-meow" here and "meow-meow" there...🐈

This kinda pretend play gives children lots of opportunities to add their own ideas to the imaginary play.
At the end of this activity :
1. Read the nursery rhyme Old Mac Donald had a Farm.
2. Talk about what sounds each animal makes.
3. Talk about the homes of each animal like
  • Cow lives in sheds
  • Horse lives in stables
  • Dog lives in kennels
  • Pig lives in pigsty
  • Hen live in coops

Happy Parenting!☺
