Alphabet Flash cards - Easy and activity based way to teach Pre-Schooler and Kindergartner

Again an activity with Alphabet! Sorry guys, couldn't restrain myself from posting an alphabet related activity. One of my friend told me that most of my blogs are tied around alphabet and suggested to look around other areas! But my LO is always fraternized with the alphabet! And hence my alphabet posts are sequel!😄

I bought one set of alphabet flashcards when LO was around 2 year (from dollar shop)...He liked them so much, so we also bought shapes and colors flashcards from the same store. The second pack is from Mead which we bought from walmart. This one has two set of cards, both uppercase and lowercase alphabet, with bright pictures at the backside. This is a good one, big and bright.

LO opened all the packs, scattered the cards and it looked kinda big messy! 

He started with arranging the cards with the letters face up. But after "D" he turned the pictures face up. LO arranged them in three columns, uppercase and lowercase from Mead and the last one, the dollar store bought.

A-Z all done!

And finally when everything is over, the clean-up!

Flash cards are great way to teach the toddlers alphabet and for the preschoolers a new word with a picture! To start with, give them flashcards, only when you think you can spend time with them. Teach them by showing one card at a time. Begin with uppercase letters. Then lowercase and when they are comfortable with both introduce them the words. Don't ever hand over the cards to the kids when they are not in a mood. Make this activity an enjoyable play time.  When the play is over clean-up the cards, and don't ever leave them unattended!! Be consistent!

These flashcards are cheap and affordable teaching tool, I would say. Just look for the ones with the best deal. 

Adult supervision is required, until you are confident that your child will not rip up the flashcards!

Learn color with the sticks : Activity for Toddlers

One of my friend asked me to post activities for toddlers who are close to a year or above. This simple color sorting activity would be a great way to improve their fine motor skills. Never mind if your toddler couldn't sort out the colors at the first attempt or so, but this activity would enhance their hand-eye co-coordination. This activity is so easy to do, you will need colored craft sticks and a recyclable container.

Supplies:

• Colored craft sticks
• Any recyclable container 
• Color Markers

How do we do it

1. Carefully, using the end of the scissors or utility knife make slits in the container's lid, that will fit a craft stick through it. I used a salt container made out of cardboard, and hence felt easy to make the slits. I just left the bottom of the container open, so that it would be easy for LO to collect the sticks when done.

2. Use the color markers(matching the color of craft sticks)to trace the outline line of the slits.

All done! Now let your toddlers enjoy the color sorting activity, or just leave it to them. They know what to do with, and you will be surprised to see the way they think differently and execute them😄

Nevertheless, LO enjoyed doing this activity, though he turned three when we did this. We did other kinda color sorting activities when LO was in his second year. By that time I missed to click pics, so did this activity now, primarily to click pics for the post😜

Look at the bottom of the container. It's not able to hold the sticks.😄He went on inserting...!!

And now comes the most important part, the "clean-up". Make your kids clean up their toys from the second year, so that it will become a part of their play. It's very easy to teach them something new in their early stage, if followed "consistently"!

And yeah, all done! 

Repeat this activity as often as you like because kids need repetition to consolidate their learning and understanding. They will gain new insights each time they repeat the same activity.

Teaching Shapes for Toddlers with Paper Collage Activity - Ladybug and Rooster Collage

Part 6 : Semi Circle

Now we are in the sixth shape of this shape collage series! Truly, I didn't get any collage idea for this shape. When me and LO were discussing about this (!) we ended up with semicircle shaped umbrella, rainbow..... But we didn't get a clear picture to make a collage with these ideas. Thanks to Google, we finalized with Rooster and Lady Bug😜

1. Lady Bug collage with Semi circle shape

Supplies : White, red, black, green construction paper, scissors, glue, pen, black marker.

Get ready with the supplies and you are all set. Start by cutting the green grass. Then cut the black and red circles. Bifurcate the red circles, making the semi circles. Cut a small black circle for the head.

Start by gluing the grass. Then glue the black circle and the semi circle red wings.

Draw the black spots and legs using the black marker.

And the lady bug is ready to fly!!

2. Rooster Collage with Semi circle shape

Supplies: Construction paper - available colors, scissors, pen, circle shaped object, glue stick

Cut the semi circles - a big one for the body and rest smaller sized semi circles. Use the symmetry property to cut the semi circles!

Start by gluing the body and the head followed by feathers. Don't forget the eye and legs.

Cock-a-doddle-doo rooster is ready!!!
